Carleton College, located in Northfield, Minnesota, reported spending $152,901 on its men’s basketball programs in 2024. This amount falls $334,473 short of the average spending of $487,374 for men’s basketball teams across the state, according to the U.S. Department of Education.

The expenditure on men’s basketball accounted for 4.5% of Carleton College’s total athletic budget in 2024.

Since 2010, Carleton College’s overall sports-related expenses have increased by 77%.

Basketball is one of the most popular college sports in the United States alongside football, with major NCAA programs drawing fan support and television audiences that can rival those of the NBA. Tournaments such as March Madness attract millions of viewers each year.

College athletics has entered a new era of athlete compensation after a federal settlement allowed schools to directly share revenue with players for the first time.
