U.S. Census Bureau estimates indicate that the nation’s older adult population continues to grow, with younger age groups on the decline. From 2020 to 2024, Americans age 65 and over increased by 13%, while those under 18 dropped by 1.7%. The country’s older population has expanded significantly throughout the past 100 years, rising from 4.9 million in 1920 to beyond 61 million by 2024.
A 2021 study found that nearly 50% of Americans in this age group—a total of approximately 28 million individuals—could need long-term services and support. The study also projected that over one-third might eventually require care in nursing homes.
“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
