Third-graders represented the largest group participating in the 2024-25 mathematics MCA at Pine Island Elementary School, as reported by the Minnesota Department of Education.
Out of 231 students who took the math portion at the school, 114 were third-graders.
In total, 75% of third-grade participants demonstrated proficiency in mathematics, meeting the standards set by the assessment.
The MCA and the Alternate Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment (Alt MCA) serve as Minnesota’s state tests to measure student achievement on academic standards and fulfill federal and state requirements. Math, reading, and science are tested depending on grade. While most students participate in the MCA, those with special education services and qualifying criteria may take the Alt MCA.
Minnesota’s MCA proficiency rates have declined since pre-pandemic times, according to the state’s Report Card. Math proficiency, for example, has fallen by more than 7% since 2019, and reading proficiency by nearly 5%.
| Grade | # of Students Tested | Proficiency in mathematics |
|---|---|---|
| 3rd | 114 | 75% |
| 4th | 117 | 71% |
