Eighth-graders accounted for the highest participation rate in the mathematics section of the 2024-25 MCA at Red Wing Senior High School, according to the Minnesota Department of Education.
Out of 225 students who completed this portion of the exam at Red Wing Senior High School, 125 were in eighth grade.
The test standards indicate that 22% of the eighth-grade participants demonstrated proficiency in mathematics.
The MCA and Alternate Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment (Alt MCA) serve as the state assessments for tracking student advancement toward Minnesota’s academic standards and for fulfilling legislative mandates. These exams include math, reading, and science, varying by grade. While most students take the MCA, eligible students in special education programs may participate in the Alt MCA.
Overall proficiency rates on Minnesota’s MCA exams have dropped compared with levels before the pandemic, according to the state’s Report Card. Math proficiency has declined by more than 7% since 2019, and reading proficiency has decreased by nearly 5%.
