A group of Democrats and one Republican senator have banned together to support SF 2797, a bill that would make the default beverage in children's meals either water, sparkling water or white milk.

Republican Sen. Julie Rosen has joined Democrats, including Sen. Karla Bigham, who authored the bill directed at restaurants stating that a beverage included in a children's meal must not contain more than 130 calories.

“Not only is milk the state beverage, but the dairy industry is a major component of our state’s economy,” Bigham said in a posted statement on her website. “This bill would help promote the importance of milk in a child’s diet and support this important industry.”

She said the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the American Heart Association (AHA) support making milk a default beverage on children’s menus to reduce their consumption of sugary drinks.
