Restaurants can now expand their patio seating into parking spaces located in front of their businesses.
Le Suer County News reports the Le Center City Council has added this amendment to a newly passed resolution enabling dining establishments to create patio seating areas. The extension of patio seating is intended to increase dining capacity amid COVID-19 social distancing requirements.
“You’re obviously going to have vehicles passing next to people that are going to technically be sitting in the street,” Councilor Nathan Hintz told Le Suer County News. ”But it would help economically with the businesses because with more social distancing and with more space, they can have more people. I think that would show good leniency on our part as a council again so they could get probably roughly double the amount of people in there with social distancing.”
The resolution requires businesses to submit a plan to the city administrator regarding their patio area and must follow numerous stipulations. This includes establishing boundaries for the patio such as roping off the area, and cleaning the patio and furniture.
