Sen. Eric Pratt (R-Prior Lake) has released a statement after the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) expressed their intention to invest more than $70 million to clean diesel projects in the U.S.
Over $800,000 of this has been allocated for projects in Minnesota.
“As elected officials, we have a responsibility to strike a balance between being good stewards of the environment and protecting consumer freedom. Rather than a blanket, top-down mandate that says people can only buy certain types of vehicles, this funding will help us deliver lower emissions and cleaner air the right way — by investing in newer, cleaner diesel technology," Pratt said, according to the Minnesota Senate Republican Caucus.
EPA Administrator Eric Wheeler said new diesel engines operate cleaner than older engines, and for each dollar invested in clean diesel projects, communities get $13 in cumulative health benefits.
This comes after a long-lasting effort to make the state more green and specifically provide an economic way of incentivizing cleaner diesel use.
