Pam Altendorf, a Minnesota state legislator, posted a series of tweets in early November 2025 raising concerns about the state's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and government oversight. In her posts, Altendorf highlighted what she described as an unsustainable increase in SNAP issuance and cited recent audit findings related to state leadership.

On November 3, 2025, Altendorf wrote: "Minnesota increased SNAP issuance from 2020 to 2021…. 174% This is NOT sustainable! The entire system is broken and susceptible to FRAUD!"

Later that day, she referenced federal data sources in another post: "Link @USDA 2021 SNAP State activity report: 2020-2021 Minnesota increased 174% A complete outlier of all other states. YES…this was Covid, but I’m pretty sure Covid was in all 50 states….unless someone wants to prove me wrong about that…!?"

On November 4, Altendorf questioned state leadership and pointed to a recent audit report: "Is anyone in charge here in Minnesota…? MN Governor @Tim_Walz and Lt. Gov @peggyflanagan’s office failed their audit with 12-violations reported. I’m not shocked anymore, but the state of our state is absolutely shameful! Report link"

During the COVID-19 pandemic, many states saw increases in public assistance program participation due to economic disruptions and expanded eligibility criteria. However, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture reports for fiscal year 2021, Minnesota experienced a notably higher increase in SNAP participation compared to most other states during this period.

Recent audits have also identified compliance issues within some Minnesota government offices. The findings included multiple violations related to administrative procedures and oversight responsibilities.
