Rep. Brian Daniels (R-Faribault) recently voted to end Minnesota’s peacetime emergency that was enacted by Gov. Tim Walz back in March in response to COVID-19.

“After more than 120 days, it’s clear that the immediate emergency is over,” Daniels wrote in a post on his Facebook page. “It is time for Minnesota to transition away from a peacetime emergency and focus our efforts on ‘managing’ COVID-19.”

While the majority of the Senate voted to lift Walz’s emergency powers, as reported by CBS Minnesota, the same wasn’t true for the House.

“Sadly, the House Democrat majority refused to put up the votes needed to end the emergency,” Daniels wrote in the Facebook post. “Gov. Walz now has another 30 days of special powers.”

In addition to expressing his disappointment, Daniels clarified what lifting the emergency would have represented for the state.

“Ending the peacetime emergency does not mean ending the state’s response to COVID-19,” Daniels wrote in the Facebook post. “Instead, Gov. Walz needs to abandon his unilateral powers and work with the legislature.”
