Representative Terry Stier, a Republican from Belle Plaine, issued a statement following an attack that resulted in the deaths of Speaker Emeritus Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark. The incident also left Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette critically injured.
Stier expressed his reaction to the events, stating, "This morning’s tragedy is both heartbreaking and infuriating. The targeted attack that took the lives of Speaker Emeritus Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark, and left Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette fighting for their lives, is a gut punch to all of us who serve."
He continued by addressing the nature of the violence: "Violence like this is evil, plain and simple. There is no excuse for it. Public service should never come with a target on your back, no matter your politics or position."
Stier also acknowledged law enforcement's response to the situation. "I want to thank the law enforcement officers who are actively working to bring the suspect into custody and keeping legislators and staff informed throughout the day. Their continued vigilance in a moment like this matters more than ever."
He concluded by emphasizing the broader impact of the attack: "This was not just a personal attack. It was an attack on the entire institution of public service. I condemn it in the strongest terms, and I will continue to stand for law and order, civil discourse, and accountability."
