Minnesota State Representative Terry Stier recently provided an update on his activities and reflections as the legislative session concludes and preparations for the next year begin. Stier shared insights from a panel he joined, hosted by the Realtors Association of Southern Minnesota, where topics included affordable housing, state restrictions, interest rates, and the impact of data centers on local communities. He noted that while housing policy was not previously his main focus, he aimed to contribute "straightforward, informed answers" and emphasized his approach: "I may not be a housing expert, but I know how to ask the right questions and bring common sense to the table."

Stier also visited the Scott County Government Center to meet with local leadership about legislative interests for 2026. The discussion focused on challenges facing Health and Human Services divisions in the county. Stier expressed concern over current mental health systems: "We need to stop building on a foundation that was never created. Our mental health systems need to be built from the ground up. Less state involvement and more 'boots on the ground' county employee input. This is my wheelhouse and the system is broken." He criticized what he described as government overreach: "Our government's answer is to throw more money at it. Hire more state employees to oversee how broken it actually is. This is simply wrong and you, the taxpayer, pick up the check." He added that differences between state and federal rules create confusion for counties.

Stier stressed the importance of careful research before allocating additional funds: "We owe it to those who struggle with addiction or mental health. Before we throw more money at the problem, let’s pause, do the research, and finally get this right."

In addition to official meetings, Stier attended various community events such as BBQ Days, Le Sueur’s Summer in the Valley, local county fairs, Montgomery Kolacky Days, retirement parties, birthday celebrations, and backyard barbecues. These gatherings allowed him direct interaction with constituents.

He clarified misconceptions about his role: "Some people ask if I work in D.C. or if I have President Trump’s phone number. The answer to both is no. I work in St. Paul, and I work for you, the residents of District 22B. My job is to be a strong voice for your property, your values, and your hard-earned tax dollars."

At July's end, Stier traveled to Saskatoon in Saskatchewan for the Council of State Governments Midwestern Legislative Conference where lawmakers from across North America exchanged ideas about policy successes and failures.

Looking ahead as summer ends and community events wind down, Stier reaffirmed his commitment: "I’m not a typical 'door-knocking politician' because I value your time, but I’m always just a phone call away. If you’d like to talk or want me to stop by, just reach out. I’m here to serve."
