City Of Red Wing issued the following announcement on Jun. 15.
With Red Wing set to hold our first-ever Juneteenth Celebration at Central Park on Sunday, June 19th, many are asking: What is Juneteenth?
While President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 that freed all slaves in Confederate states, the order was not enforced. After the end of the Civil War on June 19, 1865, the Union Army marched into Galveston, Texas and announced that enslaved African Americans were free. Juneteenth commemorates this joyous day in African American history and calls our nation to reflect on freedom and the ongoing quest for justice.
